An interesting but complex allegorical 18th-century fresco adorns the choir of the Dominican church of San Esteban in Salamanca. In this detail, we see a personification of the Mother Church carrying the Eucharist, the Cross, the Gospel of Matthew, and the book of the Elect. She is robed, as usual, in pontifical vesture, and crowned with the papal tiara. Next to her is St Thomas Aquinas, the Universal Doctor of the Church.
